The Serbian Medical Chamber was established in its current form in 2006. Membership is obligatory for all physicians in Serbia.

 

 


TASKS &
RESPONSI­BILITIES

  • Protecting the medical branch and the honour and reputation of the medical profession
  • Ensuring full equality of public and private practice
  • Promoting transparency in Chamber affairs
  • Coordinating and standardising the rules for professional conduct and postgraduate medical education
  • Promoting continuing medical education
  • Advocating all interests of the medical profession
  • Working with international medical organisations and institutions
  • Implementing  decisions of the legislative body
  • Representing and advocating the interests of physicians
  • Counselling parliament and the government

 

QUALIFICATIONS
MEDICAL EDUCATION

BASIC MEDICAL EDUCATION

  • The minimum duration of study for acquiring a medical degree is 6 years / 12 semesters
  • The Ministry of Education and the medical schools define the content of basic medical training


SPECIALITY TRAINING

  • The Ministry of Health defines the content of specialty training
  • Specialty training takes place at public hospitals, university hospitals, healthcare centres and public healthcare institutions
  • There are also authorised specialist trainers, but there is no dedicated directory of trainers (referred to as mentors in Serbia). There are also no specific criteria for becoming a mentor
  • Certificates for specialty training are issued by the Ministry of Health and the medical schools accredited for specialist training
  • Specialty qualifications from abroad are recognised by medical schools and universities


CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION / CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (CME / CPD)

  • CME and CPD are compulsory in Serbia
  • The Ministry of Health is responsible for CME/CPD regulations
  • The Chamber is responsible for verifying and gathering  evidence of CME acquired
  • Physicians who accumulate 24 credits per year within 7 years are eligible for revalidation
