The Order was established in its current form in 1994. Membership is obligatory for all 45,500 physicians in Romania. The Order has 12 regional offices throughout the country.

 

 


TASKS &
RESPONSI­BILITIES

  • Protection of the interests and prestige of the medical profession in Romania
  • Continuous improvement of the quality of medical services (guidelines and protocols)
  • Defending ethics
  • Applying and organising the CME/CPD system; awarding CME credits
  • Drawing up, together with the Ministry of Public Health, the instructions for granting a professional degree and the topics for professional evaluations
  • Representing members in relation to scientific organisations and trade unions
  • Issuing the Certificate of Membership, which also authorises an individual to practise medicine
  • Issuing the Certificate of Good Standing (i.e. “Certificat Profesional Curent”)

 

QUALIFICATIONS
MEDICAL EDUCATION

BASIC MEDICAL EDUCATION

  • The minimum duration of study for acquiring a medical degree is 6 years / 12 semesters / 5500 hours
  • The Ministry of Education, Research, Youth and Sports defines the content of basic medical training


SPECIALITY TRAINING

  • Through its Specialty Commissions, the Ministry of Health, together with the accredited Medical Schools and the advice of the Romanian College of Physicians, defines the content of specialty training
  • Specialty training takes place at university hospitals, accredited general hospitals and is also offered by specialist trainers
  • Certificates for specialty training are issued by the Ministry of Health
  • Specialty qualifications from abroad are recognised by the Ministry of Health with the advice of the Romanian College of Physicians


CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION / CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (CME / CPD)

  • CME and CPD are compulsory in Romania
  • The Romanian College of Physicians is responsible for CME/CPD regulations, which are presented in the Decision nr. 2 / 2009 of the National Council of the Romanian College of Physicians and agreed upon by UEMS
  • Evalidation is carried out every 5 years or if a doctor interrupts his or her practice of the profession. He or she then needs to be revalidated by the Romanian College of Physicians
