The Order was established in its current form in 1994. Membership is obligatory for all 6,500 physicians in Albania (2024). The Order has 12 regional offices throughout the country.




TASKS &
RESPONSI­BILITIES

  • The main challenge of OPA is taking responsibility for assuring high ethical and deontological standards in the medical practice that are also sustainable
  • Improving the moral and professional standing of doctors in their relations with patients and the public
  • Strengthening the capacity and effectiveness of institutions to promote good medical practice
  • Protecting patients and the public from medical malpractice
  • Administering, protecting and representing the mutual interests of doctors to practice their profession independently and according to the highest standards
  • Building the credibility of the Order in the public sphere, within the profession and among its partners both within and beyond the Order
  • Registering all practicing physicians in the Albanian national and regional registers
  • Monitoring professional standards and physicians’ fitness to practise on the basis of medical ethics and the medical deontological code
  • Acting as a medical court regarding the professional liability of physicians
  • Co-operating with primary healthcare industry stakeholders (Ministry of Health, Faculty of Medicine -University of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine - Lady of Good Counsel University, Mandatory Health Care Insurance Fund) to develop a Health Development Strategy
  • Co-operating in matters regarding continuing medical education and continuing medical development
  • Coordinating public relations and communication

 


QUALIFICATIONS
MEDICAL EDUCATION

BASIC MEDICAL EDUCATION

  • The minimum duration of study for acquiring a medical degree is 6 years / 12 semesters, while the minimum number of hours varies
  • The Faculty of Medicine, the University of Medicine of Tirana and the Accreditation Commission of the Ministry of Education define the content of basic medical training

 

SPECIALITY TRAINING

  • The Faculty of Medicine, the University of Medicine of Tirana,  Faculty of Medicine - Lady of Good Counsel University and the Accreditation Commission of the Ministry of Education also define the content of specialty training
  • Specialty training takes place at the following university hospitals:

University Hospital of Tirana “Mother Teresa Hospital”,

University Hospital of Lung Diseases "Shefqet Ndroqi" Tirana,

University Hospital of Trauma of Tirana,

University Hospital of Obstetric Gynecology of Tirana

University Hospital of Lady of Good Counsel, Tirana

  • Certificates for specialty training are issued by the Universities of Medicine
  • Specialty qualifications from abroad are recognized by the Ministry of Education and Sports.

 

CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION / CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (CME / CPD)

  • CME and CPD are compulsory in Albania
  • The Ministry of Health is responsible for CME/CPD regulations
  • Physicians who accumulate 150 credits within 5 years are eligible for revalidation (relicensing by the Order of Physicians of Albania)
